I’ve got an older gelding that I’ve got on Smartflex senior, and it’s been great for him. It’s got 7000 mg of glucosamine, and some devil’s claw to help with inflamation.

I was thinking about buying this for my younger guy too, but I wasn’t sure if this would be right for him. The smartflex ultra has got a lot more glucosamine and other joint support supplements, but no devil’s claw. If his arthritis is so bad that he isn’t rideable, and it’s causing ligaments to swell what’s more important, joint mobility or pain relief? My vet said it was very possible he already had bone on bone in the joints, that would mean glucosamine wouldn’t help very much, wouldn’t it?

Cervical Spondylosis or Arthritis of the Neck ?

Does anyone else suffer from this? How bad is your condition? How were you diagnosed and what kind of therapy or medications does your doctor prescribe for you?

I was diagnosed a year ago by a neurologist I was referred to by my primary dr because of my everyday non stop headaches. He did a mri, cat scan and xrays and found that my neck was inflamed with arthritis. I’ve seen a orthopedic surgeon who doesn’t seem to feel that my pain is as a bad as I tell him. He refuses to prescribe me any kind of mild pain medication when I need it. ( I’m not there once a month asking him, I go to every 6 months). The only thing he prescribes is antimflammitories. He has told me he doesn’t want me addicted, and I told him I don’t want to be addicted, I just want pain relief.I’ve seen addiction to pain pills, and its not my lifestyle. My primary dr doesn’t seem to think its as bad as I say it is either. How do they know how bad I hurt or do not hurt? They cant feel what I feel.

Dog’s arthritis?

My dog has really bad arthritis and when we seem to be in the winter months, it gets worse. He can’t go up and down stairs anymore. He can’t move very well. He has a hard time getting up and walking around. Is there anything that I can do or give him to help him and give him some pain relief?

my mom is in her late 40’s and has had arthritis for like ever in her hands, back, and neck and i want to help her. she has tried Advil, Tylenol and other pain relief stuff and now i need some remedies i know that it can’t be taken away but it can’t helped and that’s all i want. Thanks. (and it can’t be expensive.)

Kidney failure and arthritis medication?

My dog has been experiencing kidney failure for approximately a month and a half. While he’s been handling that fairly well, he’s seemed to develop arthritis or some sort of pain in one of his front arms, which makes it difficult to walk. The vet suggested limited amounts of Metacam, despite being potentially harmful to the Kidneys. I know in taking it, it will likely decrease his lifespan, but I don’t think he should live in this sort of pain. Until the pain issues arose, my dog still ate plenty, didn’t mind walks, and barked as much as he always did. Is the Metacam likely to drastically reduce his lifespan, or would it only slow him down a little? Is there anything else that could work in this situation, he needs some sort of moderately rapid pain relief.

And yes I know about Glucosamine, but the vet said it would take a long time so see any sort of reaction to that, and I’m not sure I want my dog to suffer that long for something we aren’t sure will work.

Pain management – new things to consider?

People frequently ask questions about pain relief especially for horses with arthritis related problems and the 2 drugs usually recommended are bute or banamine. Inevitably someone mentions bute and banamine and their connection to stomach ulcers. Are you aware that there are now new products on the market which can be used, are as just as effective and erase the need to use GastroGard for ulcer prevention?
As many of you know, my horse had arthrodesis surgery to fuse his pastern and has a plate and 5 screws in his leg. I had him on IV Banamine and GastroGard for 18 days and discontinued it on New Year’s Eve. He’s been a bit sore since then so I had him re-evaluated today, stitches removed etc and he is now on Equioxx which is a NSAID which does not pose a risk with regard to ulcers so no need for GastroGard. The price is great – per tube as opposed to for GastroGard + for a bottle of Banamine or for a tube of Banamine paste. My neighbor has a filly that had a fracture
to her front leg which was plated and he used Equioxx and it kept her very comfortable. I’m also using Surpass which is a topical painkiller which is a bit like rub on Banamine for the surgical site.
Anyway, thought you might all be interested to know that there are alternatives to just bute and Banamine that don’t pose an ulcer risk and are a lot cheaper. This is especially great for horses with arthritis.
Lisa
I used Devils Claw before and the vet told me it can work for some horses and not for others. It had no effect on mine. Equioxx and Surpass are prescription only. Devils Claw is a herbal supplement.
Should also mention that Slew is doing good, just down to a small dressing now, all the cast etc is gone, stitches are out, condition is good and the vet is really pleased with him. 10 more weeks of stall rest to go!
Boxer – As my neighbor used it for the filly with the condular fracture and it seemed to help her, thought I’d give it a try.
As for handwalking – already got the chifney ready for when he tries to take my head off. Think I might have to do some light sedation for the first few outing! ;-)
And he’s always been on MSM, H/A, chrondroitin and glucosamine. When your leg is as messed up as him, they don’t make that much difference.
PH – that Twilight Teaser has probably given both of us lead poisoning!

I just had a cortisone injection today in my hip joint. I am only 25yrs old and have had a serious of hip surgeries. Turns out I could have arthritis already at my age. Has anyone had a cortisone injection in the hip to help with arhritis? Did it work? How long after the injection did it take to get pain relief? And how long did the shot last for? A few weeks? Months? Any help would truly be appreciated!!! Thanks!!!
