I was just diagnosed with arthritis in my knee. Has anyone had a cortisone shot for arthritis? Is it painful??

Arthritis Causes, Symptoms and Relief
I just had one on Wednesday. The doctor used the freezing spray on the injection site and it kept the skin from hurting but, when he put the needle into my knee joint it hurt like H E double hockeysticks. But, it’s only for a minute or less. My knee is feeling a little better now and the swelling has gone down.
There’s another type of injection they put in arthritic knees called Syn-Visc. It’s supposed to lubricate them and help the pain. I’ve never had it but, know people who have and they had good results.
Hope your knee feels better soon.
I have had a cortisone shot in both knees, and it was painful. It really takes care of pain for a while for most people. It didn’t work for me though. I ended up with knee replacements on both knees, success, no pain at all! I’m 63 years of age though. Wish I had taken better care of my knees in my younger years, no tennis, jogging, running, etc. Good luck, I hope you have good results, and no pain at all.
my grandmother has had shots for her arthritis in her knee. she said it didn’t hurt that much, but they didn’t do a damn bit of good for her either. everyone is different, so all you can do it try things. swimming is good exercise because it keeps the weight off the joints.
i had a few shots a couple of yrs. ago. my left knee and my right foot., when they did one of it hurt but than the next Dr. that was working with him did a freezing spray first and i did not feel it as much . ask if they will do that for you.also a few days later my leg hurt-ed they say that is comm an . just ask about what type of meds. you can take right when you get home, or later that day.
I’ve had them in my elbow. It hurts just a little bit at first, but they put Novocaine in with the cortisone, so as soon as that kicks in you don’t feel anything any more. I was thrilled at first because it took away my pain, but unfortunately, when the Novocaine wore off, the pain came back. I ended up having surgery.
Hi
Yes I had one about 6 Months ago and it was brilliant, although it was painful to get the result I got from it far outweighed any pain in getting it. It is given with a painkilling drug mixed in with it and it takes less than a minute to kick in and after a few days the relief it gives you is fantastic, I am beginning to get pain again now but I was virtually pain free for 6 Months, so don’t worry about it and the best of luck and I hope your end result is as good as mine was.
I have had them in my anke since I was 16, I am 20. I have them twice a year as a result of breaking my ankle when I was 12. The first one I had was very painful, some local anesthetic was injected first, so I didnt feel the larger needle penetrate the skin, but it was in the joint it hurt like hell. They got a bit easier from there because I could prepare myself for the pain. When I was 18 I moved and had to find a new surgeon and he gave a local anesthetic first and added local anesthetic to the cortisone and made it a lot less painful.
The new surgeon couldn’t believe than I just laid there and let him do it, he said that most people put up a fight or cry at the sight of the needle. My trick is to not look at the neelde, take slow deep breathes and relax everything.
The injection seems to help me alot, when the local wears off it is sore for a day or two but after that the releif is wonderful.
The cortisone will help you temporarily, but since cortisone actually destroys the ligaments and tendons, you may be setting yourself up for joint replacement surgery later on.
If you’re just diagnosed, there’s a lot you can do to help yourself feel better. Stretching the hamstrings, quadriceps and calves (all attach around the knee joint) will relieve some of the pressure off the knee and drop your pain level.
Glucosamine, boswellia, calcium and other supplements will help heal the joint itself. Light exercise like walking and swimming will help, too.

Good luck!
