Can Humira knock out the effectiveness of birth control?
My girlfriend and I have sex about once or twice a week on average. She has juvenile arthritis and takes humira. My mom got pregnant with her first child (my older brother) when she was on birth control. One of her other medications knocked it out. I am just wondering, is it possible that Humira can knock out the birth control? I don’t know for sure, and we don’t use condoms because I’m super sensitive and cannot feel a thing with them. I really hope that Humira is okay with birth control.

Usually the only thing that interferes with oral contraceptives is antibiotics, and even that is rare nowadays. There are some OTC supplements that also reduce the effectiveness of birth control.
If your GF gets all of her precriptions at the same pharmacy (or even the same pharmacy chain) they’d automatically check for interactions, and they would let her know if the HUmira would reduce the effectiveness of the birth control.
Humira should not affect birth control at all.
BTW, if you want a backup method to the oral contraceptives, there are over the counter options like Ortho Options – a spermacide in an applicator that your GF would use right before sex. It’s about $15 for 10 applicators.
It should not decrease the effectiveness of birth control (I assume you are talking about her taking birth control pills). Usually, it is anti-biotics that decrease the effectiveness of the pill. Just to be certain, you could call any pharmacist and they could give you the most accurate information. If find that there is a possiblility, you could use a spermicidal jelly, since you don’t like condoms. Good luck!
